start engine and then using the throttle cable adjustment get it to an idle of 1800-2000 rpm. Now set the a/c controls to full cold and the fan to next to highest speed. Now begin to add the refrigerant to the low side fitting (low side is the fatter of the two hoses going to compressor) very slowly. You can hold the can upright and then invert for a second about every 15 seconds until the sight glass on top of receiver-drier next to right side of radiator no longer has any air bubbles in it. There should be a label under hood with a/c system capacity on it if it is not gone.

ok, it aint workin now so......your compressor clutch engages this is good
but you may have a leak so if you can rig a fitting to pump some air in the system, like with the old r12 style fiting and filler coupling at the bottle thing on firewall pass side. then pressurize with shop air to like 40psi listen and feel for big leaks, repair or replace parts as needed. do this till no leaks can be found in this mannor then pressureize one more time to 40psi and disconnect coupling so as to leave the system pressureized with shop air to 40psi
leave overnite at least and then check for pressureization at the fitting by depressing valve stem in fitting, if you have pressure procede to next paragraph, no pressure means you probally have a bad seal or loose fitting leaking slow, go to volvo and pick up some seals and replace them, pressure check again till holds pressure.
pull old fitting off aluminum tank on fire wall near pass side and dump some a/c compressor oil in there, what ever it says on bottle, few ounces and then rerplace with conversion type r134a fitting . and now go dino style and with no evacuation of system dump about 5-6 cans(12 0z.) 134a in there and you will mbe frosty all summer for a few years or so.
few thoughts broken hoses can be fixed, look under hoses in phone book. find a place, some places even fabracate new hose much cheaper than volvo replacement.
you could bring to a shop only to have system evuacated then dump the cans in your self
follow instructions on r134a can also
seals at compressor seem to go first, probally a vibration thing. there is 2 there
any refergant leak detection equipment will be of big help
