Odometer broken[200/1983] posted by Martin Miller on
Friday, 30 July 1999, at 8:52 p.m.
The other day my odometer stopped working on the way home from work. I assumed that a tooth or the teeth to the odometer gear had broken.
When I got in the car in the morning, it started to work again. Didn't work in the afternoon the it worked again this morning.
What would cause this strange behavior. Can someone tell me how to locate the odometer gear. What have other people done to remedy this situation. (Maybe the cheapest way besides not fixing it?)
Thanks,

if both speedo and odometer it is most likely the cable. If odometer only check for broken or stripped gear inside the odometer head.

We had the same problem on a 1979 240.
The small nylon gear inside the speedometer housing that drives the odometer will split with age (heat, cold, etc.)
It will occassionally work o.k., or give inaccurate readings.
I tried glueing the gear with Super Glue, but it didn't take. I believe we ended up at the dealer for a new gear. I wouldn't know if they are still available.
I believe that for our model year, the odometer gear also ran the EFR reminder light.
R&R of the speedometer is not a picnic. Good Luck.

Martin,
If the gear isn't broken clean it thoroughly with electrical contact cleaner or alcohol. Be careful with the contact cleaner....make sure it's safe for plastic.
Really clean it thoroughly and do not oil anything after it's cleaned.
It would be a good time to pull the speedo cable and hook it directly to the speedo rather than the 'check engine' black box. Re-lube cable.
If it still doesn't work after that slide the gear on the odo number shaft to the left about 1/64" (left as you look at the back of the speedometer).
Seems as though the gear walks up the shaft over the years and binds somehow/sometimes.
I've done 6-7 like this.....fortunately none had broken gears.
