My kid's 86 245 has a big clunk when the clutch is let out. It has gotten worse recently and after investigating, I can easily see that on take-off, the differential flips up and hits the underbody. I would think it is U-joints. Am I right? The bushings and shocks are all new and tip top. Should I do the center bearing at the same time?

A bit weird 'cause it's usually shot trailing arm bushings that allow the entire rear end diff. to clunk on acceleration. Did you do those big bushings on the rear end yourself?

A sticky u-joint may do this, but I would think you would hear it more than just when the clutch is let out. Is there any freeplay? Maybe you should unbolt the drive shaft and see if there is any catching or too much freeplay. I would do the center bearing and mount as well. How many miles on the car? --

Yes, we just did the trailer arm bushings a year or so ago. They were Volvo OEM and went in pretty well. The car has 180 K on it. I have to think the only thing that would throw an upward force on the differential under torque would be a U-joint but that is why I'm asking.

I'm trying to recollect. I believe the 240 trailing arm bushings have a right & wrong alignment for replacement. They allow more compliance in one direction rather than the other. Did you do the mains and not the whole set of eight, I believe?
I refuse to believe that the differential is hitting if all is correct with the rear suspension. --

That's right -- there is an orientation, but I don't recall for sure which way is up.............  :)

The TA bushing has a slightly tapered end that must go in first (toward the differential, I think), and openings in the rubber that are aligned (fore 'n aft, I think). As I recall, there's an alignment arrow molded into the rubber.

Yes, the taper must go in first and an arrow points to the ground. The new bushings have been in for a year. All four torque rod bushings were done (by me) as well. The little front (still at the cars rear) TABs did not look worn and the panhard rod bushings were 1 good 1 slightly cracked. This problem has really come on strong now. I have never had anything like this even with completely disintegrating TABs. I guess next weekend. Today was a clutch and R-sport spring day, as a favor to a guy.

I concur with Dave that there is something amis in the suspension. I would first look for worn torque rod bushings. If you used stock Volvo bushings, and did not completely load the suspension prior to tightening up the bolts, then there is a good chance that they are toast. Get under with big prybar and light and take a look at them. look also for any broken components. For a drive shaft to impart that much force to the diff, the U-joint would have to be obviously damaged, not just a bit worn. Look for broken axle tabs for the trail arm bushings, etc. --
