sleeve clearances in PRV engine[700/84] posted by James Duggan on

I will replace the head gaskets and my Haynes manual specifies ever so slight clearances for the cylinder sleeves above the aluminum block.
Q/ How important is it for the clearances to be correct?
Two sleeves in my engine are flush with the block and the other sleeves have the slight clearances. I would prefer to avoid removing the sleeves pistons. I am planning to drive this car with new gaskets, cams and some new rockers and valves, for three to five years.

The .13-.21mm projection is pretty important. How did you check it? The projection is small and can't really be checked w/o a special tool or careful use of a straight edge and feeler gauges. Did the sleeves move as you removed heads?
If they did it is very risky putting heads back on w/o new gaskets at bottom of sleeves.

Abe is being nice...the projection is critical.[700/84] posted by JohnB on

Without the projection, the head gasket won't seal and the lower sleeve won't seal.
Especially on an older engine, I'd replace the lower sleeve seals (BTW, no experience on PRV V6, but lots of experience with wet sleeve GMC diesels......)
