Noise like water running[900/91] posted by Tim Scholl on

After leaving the stop light at an expressway offramp (short trip 30 miles) I noticed a sound like a small trickling waterfall appear to come from the passengerside footwell. Inspection showed no wetness to the carpet or the exterior of the plenum. Pulled over and noticed that water must have been really pouring out of the car (drip trial into the parking lot). Suspect that condensate line must have been plugged. No other leaks or signs of wetness and it certainly wasn't coolant. AC still cools as well as ever. Which is to say that it cools well while the car is moving (2000rpm) and not so well at idle and around town during slow crawl season. It was a very hot Nashville day.

Questions:
1) Am I on target with the pouring water sound?
2) What could cause the AC to perform so well at speed and not so well at idle?

Thanks in advance,

Tim

There is a drain hose that goes into transmission tunnel on right side. To access you remove the RH console side panel and pull the carpet back. The hose is black and has a near 90 degree bend just before it turns to go through floor. This hose should have either a nipple on end or a white plastic bushing up in the end. If one of these two is not present then running on fan speed 3 or 4 will create enough suction to keep the water from draining out and you will get the gurgling noise and maybe even water leaks. When you stop the water will drain like a flood. What I just mentioned is only true of 91-93 with the revised air conditioner system.
All a/c systems lose some effectiveness at idle due to les air flow and slower compressor speed. If the system loses too much effectiveness it can be: 1. low on refrigerant, 2. eng fan clutch may be worn out, 3. the condenser may be full of debris or bugs which blocks air flow, 4. the compressor may be failing and has less than normal pumping efficiency at low eng speed.
