"Volvo prices new compact
S40 and V40 in low
$20,000s

July 7, 1999

ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT -- Volvo Car Corp. said its
compact S40 sedan and V40 wagon will be
priced in the low $20,000 range when they go
on sale in the United States in September.

The cars are Volvo's first entries in the compact
market in more than a decade. The S40 will
start at $23,475, while the V40 will start at
$24,475, which includes automatic
transmission, power windows and locks,
side-impact air bags. The prices also include
transportation charges.

The S40 and V40, which have been on sale in
Europe for three years, are part of Volvo's
strategy to broaden its appeal in the
competitive U.S. market.

"Our aim is to attack the high-volume cars in
the compact segment," said Hans-Olov Olsson
president and chief executive of Volvo Cars of
North America Inc. "With this pricing strategy,
our cars will attract younger people who have
never owned a Volvo before because they
thought they couldn't afford it."

Volvo has said it expects to sell between
25,000 to 30,000 of the cars in their first full
year. Last year, Volvo sold 101,172 cars in the
United States; in the first half of this year, it sold
57,490.

Volvo Car Corp. was bought by Ford Motor
Co. earlier this year.
