My daughter's 85 240 w/132K drives great except for the traditional steering/bushing needs.
Would like to replace the seals in the PS rack since it drives ok but just leaves puddles. Anybody tackle this?? I know the easy answer is to replace the rack, but I will be selling the car in about 6 months anyway.

My brother recently bought an 81 240 that had a leaky rack. The guy he bought it from was a Volvo mechanic at the local dealer. He put new seals in it with some special rack rebuilding tools at the dealership. So, it can be done, there are just some special tools needed.

If your leak is from the top of the 'steering box', that is, the one on the steering wheel shaft as it enters the pinion housing, then I understand that you're in good company.
I did the job on an '82 240 a couple of years back, and since I no longer own the car, I'll try as best I can to recall; hopefully someone else will step forward with more specifics.
Find out if the top cover on the housing is held by two bolts or by three bolts. With that information, the Volvo dealer will let you know which of the following methods you must go through to get at the seal:
OPTION 1. I believe if it's a 3-bolt cover, you simply disconnect the steering wheel shaft at the pinion, remove the three bolts, and replace the cover containing the seal. That should be a relatively simple job; unfortunately, mine was option 2.
OPTION 2. If not the above, then you're pretty well stuck removing the rack/pinion and doing the job on the workbench. It's a good 1-hour job just getting the rack off the car before you ever get to open up the pinion housing, and although the job is fairly straight forward, you will be getting dirty and you will be rapping your knuckles.
I hope for your sake that if we're talking about the same seal, that it is option 1.
