The thermostat regulates the flow of cool air to the AMM. It operates like a plunger, sits in front of the air filter, and controls the opening and closing of a flap that, depending on the temperature of the ambient air, lets air flow either from the outside or from the flexible tube that runs from the exhaust manifold area. If the thermostat is not working, it will allow too much warm air to enter, frying the AMM, at great expense. It should be replaced at approximately 30,000 mile intervals. Don't ask me why, but it doesn't appear anywhere in the owner's manual's list of periodic service items even through it's a rather critical piece of hardware.
