Chris --

The steel gears were standard on the 6-cylinder B30 engine. (That motor was the B20 with two additional cylinders.) You must ask for "B30 timing gears", expect to pay, and realize that they must go in as a pair -- you cannot intermix the gear sets (have different teeth pitch). Also, expect to hear them whine a bit.

You can ask the Volvo dealer or an independent (IPD, RPR, etc.) for the gears. In your shoes, I'd even consider finding a 164 at the boneyard and salvaging the gears -- being steel, they probably would be very useable, and you might get them for $10. I'd bet new gears, if you can find them, will be in the hundreds.

The steel gears will work on the B18, B20, and B30. Maybe even a B16.

On my older cars I probably replaced 3-4 timing gears before I wised up to using B30 gears (and I installed these on 3 subsequent motors). My gear failures were always either a broken tooth (sometimes several) or the fiber gear cracking away from the metal hub.

You'll need a 1-7/16" socket (I think that's the size) to remove/replace the cam gear (I bought a Craftsman).

Also -- there's a small brass nozzle that squirts oil at the gears. Be sure it's not gunked up. There's also a brass "thrust plate" or retainer behind the gear -- you may need to install a new ine.

If you decide to upgrade to a B20, be sure you install the housings for the neoprene front and rear main seals. I don't know exactly when Volvo switched from the felt to neoprene -- but it's worth upgrading. The felt seal housings can be machined to accept the later seal.
