EPROM in ECU[700/1991] posted by Fred on

Has anyone every had replaced, or replaced the
Eprom in the Electronic Control Unit. My recently
purchased 1991 740 2.3FI is running poorly at
startup in cold weather (this is its first winter
outdoors). I read that there is an EPROM
upgrade aimed specifically at this cool weather
problem.

Is it simply a matter of getting the EPROM and
plugging it in? Or does Volvo make you replace
the entire Control Unit??

If anyone has done this, does it help?? --

It is a simple procedure but does require anti-staitc precautions.
You need a tool that pulls e-prom and another that installs it as well as the work mat with grounding straps.
I bet you could get a computer shop to do it cheaper than you can buy the stuff.
The control unit cover has eared tabs that you pry up and when you reinstall cover you crimp them closed with pliers.
Part number from control unit is typically needed to get the right e-prom.

The car has to have the Bosch fuel system for this to be applicable.
Bosch fuel system on that car will have the ignition coil in front of passenger on firewall, the Bendix (it can be reflashed with a tool that dealer has) has the ignition coil on the driver's side inner fender.
