backup lights[200/1985] posted by Dan Coleman on

Is there a way to adjust the backup light switch on a 1985 245? The Chilton book says there is no adjustment(Haynes doesn't mention it at all as far as I can see) and that the switch must be replaced if not functioning properly. On my 245 I can get the lights to function if I push the automatic gear selector towards the park position slightly as I back up, being careful not to put shifter all the way into park. Just by the way this occurs it would seem to me to have some sort of adjustability to it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Dan

It is adjustable but there is something you should first do.
Check the shifter adjustment by placing the lever in D and then pushing it forward w/o depressing the button on top. Note the distance it travels in that gate. Now pull it into 2. Now pull it back w/o pushing the button and not the distance until it is stopped by the gate. These distances should be equal. If not get under the car and loosen the lock nut and turn the threaded adjuster sleeve until you get an equal travel. The check I detailed from inside car can be performed under car but the travel is reversed (D towards N is to rear and 2 towards L is to front while under car).
It is unlikely that the reverse light switch came out of adjustment. It is more likely that a broken or worn engine or trans mount has allowed some movement that has put the shifter out of normal range.
The switch has some slotted range where the switch is held by screws next to the shifter inside car.

Before you adjust the linkage, replace the plastic bushings at both ends of the rod connecting the shift lever and the transmission lever.

There should be NO movement of the shift lever, ( OK, maybe a very very small amount ) once in gear. The gates on the hump are so large that the transmission lever actually locates the shift lever through the rod.

Word of warning. Remember how the rod twists and turns while under there. Sometimes you cannot remove only one end at a time to replace the bushings. If you do not remember the 10 minutes may turn into a 2 hour puzzle. BTDT :>)
