The d and e suffixes reflect newer versions of the fluid. Mercon/Dexron III is actually the latest and may be all that you find at an auto store.
It's much like the API ratings for oil. They get revised as improvements are discovered for the oil. You owner's handbook likely says to use 10W-30 API SF. The latest oils are API SH (may be SJ soon if it isn't already). You won't find SF on the shel unless it has been there a few years.
