I like it:"SU Tuners Club", it sure weeds boys out of men...I've been playing with a pair of these Brittish creations for a while, and just today spend a day converting an old 142E to SUs !! Go ahead, shoot me!..but I like them. I use 2' of 5/16" hose to tune. Just stick one end to your ear and the other to the carb opening, and you can hear the balance better than any meter. Do this on PEP Boys parking lot and you get long looks....

If you don't have a Unisynic you could also use two dowels. They should be the diameter of the inteior tude of the SU with a wire bent at right angle. Gently (you can bend the needles by jamming the dowels in) put the dowels into the SUs an then observe the rise and fall of the SUs in order to tune the SU's. Be sure to replace the ATF when done.
I did this for 10 years with no problem until I got my Unisynic back from my father.
Good luck

I should have known Topi would know the hose trick. It really works well and rubber hose is more available than a Unisyn. The lift buttons, I believe, lift the pistons in the throat of the carb. If the mixture was rich, the RPM will increase and stay up. If lean, the RPM will go down. If ok, the RPM should rise slightly and fall back to normal. The mixture is adjusted with the large nut on the bottom of the carb. It basically pushes the jet in and out of the carb. Have fun
