Sounds a lot like your rpm sensor on the transmission bellhousing is dying. This is not expensive and gives up the ghost at about your car's age and mileage. Change it and see what happens.

Steve,
Please set me straighten me out, once and for all. I also have a 90 740 with the pick-up on the flywheel. Is it a single pick-up for both crank position and rpm sensing, or is there two seperate sensors?
And....was the hall effect sensor in the distributor used prior to the flywheel sensor(s), or would I find them both present on the same engine. If it was a change in design, what engines/years have which?
End of questions...Thank you again.
Chris

Chris:
The rpm sensor is used for both functions in (I believe) 89 and after cars with the Bosch 2.4 FI system. Around 89, Volvo dropped the Hall sensor in the distributor.
