fuse for rear window defroster[200/1989] posted by Jim McCrary on

My 1989 240 wagon just passed 150,000 miles. Last week the 16 Amp fuse for the rear window defroster blew and upon replacement immediately blew again. Right now I am trying to determine what is causing the fuse to repeatly fail. I assume it is a short circuit cause by a broken or deteriorated wire. My question is this, is there a common fail point that I should concentrate my search on in order to correct this problem as quickly as possible?? --

Jim --

Quick reaction -- the fuse blows because of a short circuit. And in a wagon the first likely spots are the harnesses in the tailgate hinges. Each hinge has one, but I don't remember if it's the right or left hinge that carries the defroster wiring (left, I'd guess).

But, whichever, if one's gone, the other's not far behind. I'd replace or repair them both, and don't overlook the ground wire.

And if you're having problems with the defroster wiring, the other electrical circuits might also be acting up -- 3rd brakelight, wiper, license plate lights. --
