Removing starter!!!![200/83ti] posted by Rod on

In spite of the fact that I have rebuilt the head, installed an intercooler, got a new control pressure regulator, and replaced the injector gaskets, my turbo now thinks she can ask for a starter.
How, exactly, does one remove the starter. I mean, I understand the simple part: remove the nuts. My socket won't fit and neither will my adjustable wrench. What do I need? Will a regular wrench work? (I'll have to buy one.) Will a box end work? (I'll have to buy one of those, too.)
Thanks and thanks in general for all the help that everyone has been this past year. My car is very nearly great.
Cheers!

Those starters can be a PITA.
After removing the wires, grab the nut (engine side) with a pair of Vise-grips. Under the car, fit a socket over the head of the bolt. It's probably a 17 or 19mm, and requires a universal adapter and about 4' of extension. You can get to it by sliding the extension alongside the tranny.
Use a breaker bar, followed by a ratchet.
Do the lower bolt the same way.
I prefer to break the bolts free using 1/2" drive hardware, and use 3/8" for all the twisting.
Reinstalling's about the same in reverse. You'll probably need to "Vise-grip" the nut for final tightening.

i just had this wonderful experience with my 79 245dl wagon about a week ago, i ended up buying a 3/8" swivel and a 12" extension, i used an open end wrench to keep the nuts from spinning as i removed the bolt end, it is a 19mm socket and it takes a 13mm to remove the nut that holds on the wires! good luck and have fun!
