Front end trouble[1800/71] posted by Bill on

I just bought a nice P1800E with one problem that made it cheap: front end problems similar to what Bill Webb describes in his 1800 book. Although it looks fine underneath the front end, there is a bright shiny spot on the rear of the fenderwell where the tire has been rubbing. Apparently the lower a are breaks free some spotwelds and this allows lateral movement of the crossmember??

Has anyone else had this problem? Seems to be isolated in the "E" series...

Any help out there? Words of wisdom? --

If your problem is broken lower A arm pivot bolt bushings, it is a common one - just remove the cross member (well I realize that this is a fair amount of work, but you really need to remove it to do the job right) and have the pivot bushings in the cross member re-welded AND reinforced - including those that are not yet broken.

Then, while you have it out, move on to the shock towers and reinforce those by welding a heavy steel washer into the top. Often you will see cracks starting to radiate from the hole in the top of the tower. Then reinforce the control arm where the heavy duty IPD sway bar link attaches so that doesn't come loose. Might as well pul all new bushings and motor mounts in when you re-assemble. --
