Removing the black window trim stripe[200/89] posted by Harold on

Does anyone have any experience removing the black trim stripe just under the windows (89 240)? It appears to be plastic and has shrunk and cracked.

I'm going to guess you mean the stuff that looks like black tape on the doors below the windows. (I'm not sure this is right, either...) Anyway, the thing to do might be to get one of those stripe eraser things from an auto body supply store. (My favorite kind is one from 3M which is made of several sheets of round floppy white rubbery stuff--the kind we use fits the Roloc II hubs.) Chuck it in an electric drill and erase the stripe! (I would first cover moldings with a couple layers of masking tape so you don't erase the paint from them.) Be prepared for a difference in color--the paint may have faded enough to see a difference where the stripe used to be.

Harold,
I removed mine less than a year ago. I first used a heat gun to 'loosen' it. I found that got it too loose and stretchy. I finally just left it in the sun and peeled up a corner and started pulling. It would break occassionally but I'd just peel it up again etc. Took about 20 minutes to get both sides done. I then used a razor blade and stuck it between the body and the molding and trimmed it.
When it is removed you'll be able to tell what the paint looked like when new....you won't have to worry about it not matching the old paint as it's not on the same plane....it's not noticeable.
