Battery Tray Replacement[200/84] posted by Fred Cowell on

I have a rusted out battery tray. I searched the archives, but didn't see any recommendations on finding and replacing it. Is this a common problem, and is it difficult to fix?

Options range from IPD or your dealer for new one to a unviversal fit plastic job or making your own..I've seen them all!!!
If you go metal again, I highly recommend the battery mats!!

Fred --
It's not uncommon -- I've replaced several on my older 240's.
You can buy a replacement tray from Volvo, and be sure to get the long bolt (goes aside the battery) and "D" shaped clamp.
Getting the old tray out can be fun. It's held in by four bolts, and generally the bolt heads are rusted or corroded round. And they're good 'n tight. If you're lucky, they'll come out using Vise-grips. Several on my cars were so tight I used heat -- and fortunately, heating the head was enough to break it free (didn't need to get the flame under the tray).
When you install the new tray, use new bolts and plenty of anti-seize grease. Also, while the tray is out, inspect the inside of the fender well and tray support for rust and corrosion (from acid). This is an excellent time to scrape, clean, prime, and paint.
On one of my older cars, the battery had boiled over -- acid had eaten away the support bracket and inner fender. It's now driving around with a 2x4 and plywood support, and plastic tray from Sears. (And no termites after five years!!)

You can just get a new or used plastic type tray & clamp from a newer 240 Volvo and it will bolt right in. In my area I found it impossible to buy a new battery that had a flange on the end to use the factory hold down on my '84, so bought a used tray from a '89, cleaned it with a pressure washer, and bought a battery for a '92 240 and it all fit perfectly and looks great.
