Valve adjustment[200/92] posted by Steven Schroeck on

My '92 wagon is at 90k, and I've been told that I should have the valve clearances adjusted. I have read the service manual entry on valve adjustment, and it didn't seem too difficult. Is this something a shadetree mechanic can expect to do successfully?

The job calls for 2 special tools. I'm willing to buy them, but I'd like to know if they're really needed. Also, is it hard to buy the valve washers? --

It's not hard, but requires both the tools and the shims as well as a new valve cover gasket. Rent them from IPD (www.ipdusa.com)for much less than the cost of purchase.

Check the clearances first. They very rarely need adjusting. All you need is a new vc gasket and a feeler guage.
