The cable enters the tranny on the right side, front, top-down. I found it difficult to see or work on 'til I yanked the exhaust pipe.
The cam (it's really more of a spring-loaded, half-round pulley -- about 2"-3" in diameter) is nestled up in there. You must rotate the pulley against its spring -- and hold it against its spring -- to unclip the cable. I found a sharpened awl and several screwdrivers helpful.
My cable was rusted about 2/3rd's of the way down, and I did find a slight crack in the plastic sheath.
One final suggestion: When you buy a new cable, you'll also receive a tiny collar to be crimped over the cable core up by the throttle spool. It's important to use that gizmo, but leave it for the end -- wait 'til you have everything adjusted and working to your satisfaction.
I'd bet any magnet would work, and if you plan to dump the car, well then forget the magnet.
