GAS TANK REMOVAL II[700/86] posted by Larry Wilson on

Well, nobody answered my first request so I'll try again. The gas tank on my 740 turbo has a leak somewhere on top of the tank. I took off the access cover in the trunk but couldn't find the leak. What is involved in taking the tank off of the car?
Thanks,
Larry

I'm not sure if your tank will be similar to my girlfriends 86 240, but here goes anyway.

The tank on her car unbolts pretty easily (it helps to siphon all the fuel first though). The bolts are all accessable from under the car. First, if your tank has an in tank sending unit/pump like her 240 does, check it through the access cover.

On her tank, I thought the tank was leaking from the top of the tank at first, but it turned out to be a small leak in the tubing of the sending unit. The sending unit is the circular disk with three tubes into which the fuel lines are plugged into. These units go way before the tank does, and many Volvo techs that I've spoken to said it's very common for these things to rust out and leak--they are expensive ($160 from dealer, $127 from Northern Foreign Auto in New Hampshire--Northern is the only parts dealer around here that had it (everyone else said it was a dealer part and it DOESN'T include a new in-tank pump.)

The only way I could tell it was leaking is by looking at it with the car running. I could then see a small leak in the pipe attached to the return hose. It's a real easy swap and I made a homemade jig similar to the factory tool (only a lot uglier since my welding isn't the greatest).

If it is the unit and you want to use the jig or want dimensions/plans just let me know. --
