Non Volvo pads will squeak.I have tried metal masters and the organic pads by Repco.Volvo has two types of pad material, one is very expensive (that is the pad you want.) The pads will be marked with the "TX" stamped on the edge of the metal backing. Also Volvo has half shim kits for rear pads on the 850. I think the part # is 272272. I like Repco brake pads but on the 850 they squeak! It all depends how you drive. The TX pads work good but they wear out rotors and are a very dirty pad.
If you want clean wheels use the Repcos (I recommend metal front organic rear.)
On all other Volvo's I recommend Repcos (except the small Girling 700 frt calipers they may squeak. The Repco organic pads squeak the least on these calipers.)(Volvo pads dont squeak at all but the down side is:dirty pads ,worn out rotors and rapid wear.)

I have probably done 2,000 brake jobs on Volvo's
