Turbo engine Swap[200/1981] posted by Rob Sturtz on

I have been looking for ways to make my 1981 244Gl a bit faster, and I've heard that the best way is a turbo engine swap. I was thinking an engine from an 1984.5 to 1985 240 turbo with an intercooler. I think that it has 150 or so hp, but I'm not sure so if anyone knows, please reply. My mechanic said that I should get a wreck so I have all the necessary parts. He said the car should be $200 to $300. Does that sound about right? Also I want to convert it to a manual transmission, so I wanted to find out if there were any 240's with a 5 speed, and what year if so. The only one's I've seen were 4 speed with OD. Thanks a lot!!!

You will definitely need the whole car. If you can find one for that price, grab it. More likely, you will pay 500 to $1000 for a suitable car. Expect to need a new engine wiring harness, lots of other bits like new motor mounts, etc. Installation is pretty much bolt in except for the tranny. Forget about the 5 speed. The M47 and M47-II willl not handle the torque of the turbo. Stick with the M46/OD tranny. You will need the drive shaft AND the rear axle (ratios are different). If your car does not have ventillated front rotors, take the hubs as well. Also grab the springs and sway bars (unless you have installed lowering springs and IPD bars). For the clutch, you will need to tear the left side of the dash apart - replace the entire pedal bracket assy which also holds the steering column and the dash with the one for the manual. You will need the computers and associated wiring harnesses, fuel system, etc. --

For anyone considering an engine swap, I strongly urge you to visit TurboBrick's member Stu Spencer's page. He has just completed installation of a B21ft into a 245. It's one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. --
