In 1989 Volvo used a crankshaft sensor that is mounted at the back of the
engine on top of the bell housing. It detects crankshaft rotation and uses this info. for timing and fuel delivery. The ignition dist. has no pickup in it for
this reason. Because the Fuel ECU is energized by the ignition ECU, if the speed pick up is bad the ignition ECU will not detect crank rotation, therefore, the fuel ECU will not turn on the fuel pumps. Hense no spark and no fuel. There are ways to check the speed pick up. The quickest way is actually with your eyes. The most current p/n 3547847 has a white band
painted around the wire, if it's a yellow band , it's an old p/n.
