The warm air does help the engine warm up quicker in the winter - translates to heat inside the cabin sooner - BUT it also reduces emissions, and as such, it is an item that is inspected in some states during emissions inspections. Easy and cheap to replace the thermostatic element, but as long as you secure the flapper shut if removed, you shouldn't have any problems. Note that on the later engines (1990-) there is no preheat thermostat flapper or preheat hose from the manifold. --

Steve, I just replaced the airbox thermostat in my 1991 240.
I checked the '90 740 also and it is OK. They did have the flapper and pipe in those cars.

Interesting - my 90 turbo and some others (turbos) that I have seen do not have the thermostat or the pre-heat pipe and its associated manifold heat shields. I don't know whether the fact that this was a TDS program (overseas delivery) car has anything to do with it. The labels say that it is US spec, 50 state legal. Anyone else have data points here? --

Steve,

I don't think the turbo set up used the preheat pipe and the ab thermostat.

All NA 240's had them.

Maybe the ECU/AMM system on the 7/9 series had "outgrown" the need for a preheat system?

my recommendation...throw the thing out, including flap, hose and
exhaust stove...remove all evidence it was ever there.
Just gone thru 1 mild and 2 medium PA winters without it and never
had a problem starting my '88 240.
I always let it idle for about 1 minute after it starts anyway.
In college I was always told that the intake air should be as cool as
possible; heating it goes against the grain.
