Should using the key in the driver's door unlock the tailgate (in a wagon) as well as the other 3 doors?

Yes: it should. If you are having problems unlocking the tailgate remotely, then your problem is likely in the wiring to the tailgate or in the tailgate locking motor itself. Check the wiring connections first: at the motor connector, check whether you receive 12 volts when the driver's door lock is activated. If not, make sure that each connector in the circuit (in the tailgate and at the lower driver's B pillar beneath the rear door), is free of corrosion (spray with Caig DeOxIt oxide remover, available from electronic supply stores), re-connect and try again. If 12 volts shows up, then the motor is likely bad. --
