780 Auto Trans filter change[200/1985] posted by Jon Miller on

Looking for information on changing the automatic transmission filter in a 1990 780 Bertone. Does the pan come off and what else gets replaced besides the filter? Pan gasket, Filter gasket (I assume it comes with one?), other stuff?
Also the best method to flush the old oil out of the cooler without damaging anything. I do have a very well regulated/dry air supply but need to know were to best tap into the system to air flush it.
Also recommendations on the best auto tran fluid to use.
Thanks,
//JM

The filter is actually a mesh screen and indeed no longer needs to be cleaned per Volvo TSB. Check www.swedishbricks.net for the 7xx/9xx Maintenance FAQ for specific fluid flush instructions, all done via one of the cooler lines. DON'T use compressed air. I believe that this car takes Dexron III; given its quality and the turbo in front, you might want to try a synthetic (Castrol Syntec ATF or Mobil 1 ATF); both are Dexron compliant. They have much better lubricity and hot/cold characteristics and I have found far fewer wear particles in the pans after using them in my five cars.
