These pups sure are leaky!!!
After a week or two of heavy rains (big time dumps in the city of continual light rain - Seattle)my newly installed carpet pads were wet!!! (Thank god they are mildew proof and don't stink)
So here's where my leaks were, so far.
1) Windshield, leaking in more than one spot. Not the original windshield, Volvo OEM though, was old and pitted. VERY lousy install job at glass shop for PO. I tore the old one out. (See previous post) Cleaned and POR-15's window "frame". Will have a 91 and later window installed today. (With the rubber moulding encapsulated WS). Will use aftermarket glass for the first time....cross my fingers. It's supposedly good, highly warranteed safety glass. I'll keep you posted.
2)Here's a new one::::The other much larger leaks were coming from both the odometer cable grommet and the the large two legged grommet/boot for the huge wire harness right above where the throttle cable enters. The odometer grommet just wasn't seated correctly so John L. and I seated it, then I smeared it with some very good silicone goop and it's tight as a drum. The other boot was more tempermental, you see the problem was the UNDER side of the boot. The harness bundle is not perfectly round or even oval,.... it had some longitudinal folds that made it impossible for the boot to seal. So when heavy rains came in along the fire wall the water followed the harness down and in. I packed the thing with Silicone seal. Test it today.
Also my car was missing a cowl seal. Ordered one on Sat.
Also also I use this aluminum silicone seal caulk. (3M??? - I'll check) That stuff is great. Not made specifically for cars (gutters) and is NOT paintable, but is fairly easy to work with, seals great, looks ok and seems like it'll last stinking forever.

We sure do agree with Paul on the leaky comment. I found and fixed a severe leak on my '89 240 GL (with the help of other Bricksters) that was discovered by accident when I installed a new sound system. The front and rear foam under the carpets on the driver's side were soaked and I probably would have gone for quite a while without realizing it. The leak was around the firewall grommet for the cruise control vacuum hose and wires. There was also a leak around the rear window in the corners.
Then, we were prepping my son's '85 245 GL for the cruel Syracuse winter and we found two major cancer spots on this formerly rust-free Texas car. The first is the area under the lip of the cargo area inside which was rotted completely. The stainless/rubber bumper trim attaches to clips that mount in holes through the body just above the area that rusted, and, when we removed the trim piece, there was moisture around these clips (and on the inside rusted area). We took the clips out and gooped them up with RTV, so we'll see.
The other area is under the door post (between the front/rear doors) and is rotting thru the undercoating under the car. There is moisture under the wiring harness and we have not determined the source. Any ideas?
Moral is: Please pull the front seat(s) - it's only four nuts/bolts and please pull the carpets back and check before it's too late; and all of you wagon folks should probably empty out the "junk well" and check under the mats and to the rear under the lip. Also check the spare tire well and its counterpart opposite for moisture. These cars are too neat to let the moisture in and the cancer run rampant.
