tach on diesel runs of a pulse port of the back of the alternator.
t's an old audi/vw/bosch trick.

if you have a problem in that part of the alternator, it will not manifest
itself in charging the battery etc.

you can take apart the alternator and most likely find metal or other
shavings mixing up the signal.
Heck in Texas, je may just find an Armadillo stuck inthere mess'n up
the whole bowl of chili!!
