Re: Water Pump Gasket Leaks Bi-annually[200/82] posted by Steve Seekins on

Look carefully at your new water pump. You will note that a couple of the holes are oval slots instead of round holes. Take the new seals and coat them with a light coating of synthetic grease or silicone grease. Install on the pump housing. Then mount the pump so that you install one bolt in round hole on side opposite the oval hole. Then install bolt in oval hole. Do not tighten yet. Pump will be slightly tilted down giving some clearance to the gaskets. Lever the pump up tightly against the underside of the head. The grease will ensure that the 'hat' seal is not cocked when you do this. With the pump levered tightly up, install and tighten the remaining bolts. This should prevent leaks for the life of the pump - unless the underside of the head is damaged or the head gasket is too thick. --
