Warm start problem![700/89] posted by Don Najemnik on

Yesterday was warm (80F) and sunny. My 89 740 Turbo (142K miles) started nomally. I drove several miles and stopped to pick up a few things. when I got back to the car, it cranked but wouldn't even sputter. I left for about 15 minutes and then tried again. It started right away. I then drove about another 10 miles and made another stop (big mistake). Upon my return to the car, the same thing, crank but not a sputter. I kept trying every 10 to 15 minutes for the next hour. I finally gave up and hitched a ride home. I came back hours later after dark and the car started right up. Anybody have any ideas? HELP!

Don

I don't know if this is applicable on a turbo but when I got the exact same problem on my 230F engine (745 '89) i installed a new fuel pump relay.
Which fixed my problem.

If fuel pump relay re-solder doesn't fix it, try this:

Carry a spare spark plug, and next time this happens, pull one of the plug wires and check for spark. If no spark, suspect the flywheel position sensor. There seems to be a rash of that lately. Mine did the same thing (started fine cold, but not warm) and it was the aforementioned sensor. --

As noted, the three things to look at are: fuel injection relay solder joints, flywheel rpm sensor and the radio suppression relay mounted on your coolant tank.
