Stalls when coming to stop and/or on take off.[200/1982] posted by Dan Mulcahy on

Hi!

My 1982 240DL, with 185,000 miles, intermittently stalls when coming to a complete stop (as at a red-light) or when taking off when the light changes. (Which makes for suspenseful driving!)

Historically, (1) the car has always "died" several times when first started. After hundreds of dollars and countless trips to dealers, mechanics, seers, etc., I had learned to live with that challenge. However, (2) this latest issue of intermittent stalling began right after I had the motor mounts replaced.

Could it be that something got "knocked out" of adjustment and that is what is causing it to stall out (the second problem)?

Any help, suggestions, etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dan

Replaced motor mounts notwithstanding, I'd be willing to bet that you are suffering from the same problem that I just had cured: carbon (and god knows what else) buildup in the induction pathway. I had been given greatly varying advice on why my '86 240 stalled on starting and stopping, but when my mechanic used some newfangled (and presumably automated) technique that cleaned out the engine's induction system, the problem disappeared. Now, if I could only stop my windshield from leaking ;-/. --

My '84 240 (75,000 miles) did the same thing, particularly when cold. I dissassembled the intake system, including throttle body and air mass meter. Cleaned it thoroughly with brake cleaning solvent, re-assembled and the problem went away. There was lots of carbon buildup.

Watch out for the microscopic little wire in the air mass meter, don't break it or you will be out several hundred $$ for a new one.
