Starter cranks funny[700/1990] posted by Richard Brink on

Starter ocassionally (once every few days) cranks and then comes to a moaning stop like it is stuck. On next atempt to start it is ok. Always seems a litle slow but starter is the Bosch DW 0 001 108 unit with the gear reduction. Could it be that the gears are sticking or broken. Another possibility is the brushes since they have 150k miles. Battery is new and charged with all good connections.

Any advice will be appreciated. --

The starter symptoms you mention can be the speed sensor failing. If it gives erroneous signalling to ignition ECM then it will advance firing to a point too soon and a cylinder will attempt to fire so soon that it tries to push piston back down before it crosses TDC and it will stall or almost stall starter. This assumes that you have a known good battery.
