I need to open, clean, and adjust if necessary, the throttle body on a non-turbo 91, 740 sedan. Is this something a car owner can do as a part of routine maintenance. The Official service manuals assume too much and are always too difficult for me to follow. But the proceedure seems like a simple one. However, with Murphy's Law you never know. I'm concerned about the feeler gauge adjustment, as I can't see too clearly where exactly the manual is referring to. I'm sure if I saw someone do it just once I couild repeat the task. Any of you DIYers ever do this?

This is normal and very simple maintenance. Check www.swedishbricks.net (7xx/9xx Maintenance FAQ) for detailed instructions. Your car is identical to one of mine and if this job takes you over thirty minutes, I would be surprised. You should plan to do it once a year or every 10k miles, depending on driving conditions. Lots of stop-and-go and use of dino oil will shorten the interval; driving in a clean, highway environment on synthetics will lengthen it. If you don't do it, you will experience gradual decline in idle performance, leading to some stalling, etc.

I did not want to mess with the idle settings so I took off the air inlet from the TB and cleaned as best I could with carb cleaner and a old tooth brush with rags. Got all I could see clean by holding open the flapper.

I know what you mean about the manuals being rather simplistic!! here is a great Link from RPR about this procedure... I just followed it last weekend and took about 45 minutes. Remember to either have a new gasket in hand or a gasket making kit. My local auto parts store did not have the gasket in stock so I bought a kit where I sketched the pattern from the old one and cut it out. Seemed to work good. The procedure is pretty simple. Take a 13mm box end wrench to do the job... disconnect the air intake hose and disconnect the troddle linkage... the most time consuming job was to let the spray cleaner soak in and wipe the junk off... This is a simple job...

Rob,
If the car runs and idles well there should be no reason to adjust the linkage or switch. Remove the ball link that connects the throttle pulley to the throttle body. Using a small screwdriver carefully open the catch on the plastic ball link and pop the link off the ball. Disconnect the connector on the swiitch and remove it slowly so as not to lose the small rubber gasket in the connector. Look into the connector on the wire harness to be sure the gasket is in place. Remove the 3 nuts and remove the throttle body. Give it a good cleaning and replace it. Do not get any cleaner in the switch. I have done this many times and have not had to make any adjustments. Rather than spray the cleaner into the throttle body, I spray it on a rag first then wipe it out. Also be sure to clean the 2 nipples on the top.
