Transmission "slipage"[740-760/1986] posted by Michael Formby on

I have a 1986 740 GLE. After it has been driven for 40 or so minutes, the transmission completely gives out and quits sending power to the wheels. The engine will rev but the car continues to lose power until I am sitting still. Even if I shift the car (putting from D to 1,2, or 3) nothing happens. One mechanic has told me I need a new transmission, does this seem correct? If I let the car sit, it will shift and drive normally again for the same ammount of time. --

This is the ZF blues. I wonder what kind of follow-ups will come from this one.
My advise would be to convert to a AW70 or 71. I think that your transmission, that you said has D,3,2,1 is, as Topi puts it.................''kaput''. --

I had the similar problems with my 87 740 with the ZF trans. at 70K miles. I finally decided to convert it to a 1993 AW71L used with 34K miles. I questioned doing this initially but now know it was a good decision. All the ZF's are bad based on my research. Converting to the AW's requires a new shifter, driveshaft, trans cooler lines, and relay for OD. I suggest converting. I now have more miles on the AW than the ZF ever had and now problems.

Good luck. --
