Is Mom Hallucinating? 740T[740-760/90] posted by Jeff on

Mom took the 740T about 1.5 miles to the store. Upon her return she said the car stalled when pulling out of the lot, then twice more over the next mile. Said that on one of the stalls she noticed black smoke wafting forward (but didn't know if it was her car or not). I checked the oil and added a quart (synthetic), then took the car out for an extended drive. Drove it very hard and also soft, but could not get a repeat performance. The car has 130k. I don't think the Turbo's ever been replaced, but it runs perfectly and we converted to synthetic about 6 months ago. Drove it again, but it still didn't stall. I can't imagine that adding a quart of oil would have fixed the problem.
Help..What could this signal? Thanks in advance.
clean the throttle body?[740-760/90] posted by JohnB on

If you haven't cleaned it in 5-6000 miles, I would try that first.
You could also have the dreaded crankshaft impulse sensor impending failure.
Part is only about $45 and is mounted on the bell housing behind the dist rotor, held on with an allen bolt, connected to a connection on the firewall harness in engine compartment. The part usually fails and car won't start, cranks but no clicking on injectors. Mine went at 80k miles on my 90 740T.

Let's consider under hood temperature. While Mom was in the store the U/H temperature rose, since she waxed everybody at every signal on her way to the store. Open the hood and look for a relay w/part # 1323592 on the top. It's a black relay w/4 prong connector. Your car may have 2. One is the A/C fan relay, the other is called ''radio supressor'' relay. Call it the injection relay from now on, because that's what it does. If that relay fails on early 700's , everything works except the injectors.
The relay is located near the LF strut tower. Left is the drivers side on U.S. cars. With engine at idle, sometimes if you spank the relay the car will hiccup or die. If so, there's your diagnosis. If you swap the relay w/fan relay it will make the car driveable, but you need to buy a new one for around $42.00.
If Mom says: ''I don't use the turbo'' THEN don't believe her. Who do you think is wearing out the RR tire?
