Alan ---
Check the relay. Sometimes, on older 240's (I know -- I got a buncha them!) water leaks in, around the windshield, maybe, runs down the inside of the firewall, and dribbles into the relay. Even if it isn't inside the relay (yet), the relay spade terminals might be corroded.
For reasons known only to some Swedish design engineer, the (two) relays are tucked under a metal shield on the floorboards just about where your left foot rests. Pull the carpet down, and look for two harnesses disappearing downward under the floor, at the firewall, on the extreme left. Pull the harness and attached relays up, and inspect the relays and connectors.
If they're corroded, clean them up and tuck them UP under the dash.
On one of my 240's, the wipers wouldn't shut off. The relay was FULL of water! I removed it, cleaned and washed it, resoldered it, dried everything with a hairdryer, and it worked fine for years.
You might also have a perfectly dry relay that needs to be resoldered (or replaced).
Good luck.
