By mail. E-mail Stefan or Rolf of BSR I'm sure they will be willing to work something out. They quote their prices as installed. That to me is the only delemma. My father has a SAM chip in his '94 850T that he sodered in himself. If you talk to the guys at BSR let me know what you get for a response.
Thanks, Michael

'...Chip soldered in..'? With the IPD/TME unit, you get a total ECU replacement which you drop right into the plastic ECU module holder, right there alongside the Tranny ECU. That's one of the nice things about it....it makes it totally undetectible. and of course, there's no circuit board hassles. Also, there's more to it than just a chip change, in order for the car to maintain all its original OBDII functionality, and stock diagnostic functions. The IPD unit is a totally integrated system, which I dont think you get with a 'chip' change.

Paul, the dealer could detedt the new SAM chip if they opened up the ECU but OBD II system can not detect it. My father bought the chip when in Sweden shortly after it had been developed if I remember correctly. I believe now SAM sell the whole ECU with an exchange for your stock unit. My father was unique in have to install the chip himself. Now it's the same as buying the IPD/TME unit.
The chip is what hold the info in the ECU as to what boost pressure limit, and how long that boost is allowed. From what I understand TME reprograms the chips memory in the ECU with new higher boost limits etc. SAM does the same but they (I think) take the chip out reprogram it reinstall it and sell the whole ECU.

Yes You are absolutly right! The reason that we dont change the complete ECU is:
1)Many customers whants the possibility to change between original and tuned chip.
2)We have different softwares depending on what other modifications done to the car.
3) Its possible for Volvo to se that the ECU have bean changed any way.
4) When we are for exampel selling a exaustsystem to a customer that already have our tuningchip we can give him a specialchip without cost.
5)When You are uppgrading Your home PC You dont change the complet unit.
6)We install a copy protection in the ECU (preventing our competitors to copy our boostlimits etc).
7)We have extremly low costs (T5 from 380 USD)
All OBDII, security sensors and diagnostics are left without modification.
