IPD swaybars on IRS[850/1995] posted by Chris Hibbs on

Does anyone have any experience with Ipd's swaybars on the Independent Rear Suspension. I have an 89 760T and want to beef up the suspension more than just the turbogas Boges, but the Ipd IRS swaybar kit is $450+ and with limited availability. Does it make a dramatic difference (i.e. Is it worth all the dough?)

$450 ????? That's pretty hefty for a rear swaybar. What about getting a set of stiffer springs? Wouldn't that be cheaper?

Chris,
I actually was wondering about the benefits of an IRS swaybar set as well...
I'd be curious to hear where you found the IPD swaybar set for the Multilink IRS available! Does IPD still actually have a few kits in stock? When I talked to them not too long ago they told me otherwise. The $450 price tag doesn't surprise me, especially since the product's been discontinued (maybe the price was the reason IPD dropped it)!
Regarding this IPD kit, do you know how big the swaybars are (particularly the rear bar), and how the rear bar is mounted on the IRS? I know Volvo started installing a rear bar on their IRS models in '91 and actually attached the ends of the rear bar to the lower links of the IRS. Since the pre-'91 IRS Volvos didn't have a rear bar, I'm wondering if it might be necessary to drill any holes in the IRS links (assuming IPD's kit installs the same way)?
Group 6 Performance is supposed to be releasing an IRS swaybar kit next month, but I haven't heard if that's still the case. (www.group-6.com)

Eric

I am very interested in the sway-bar discussion and IRS of 760 -780+. I am installing the Converse conversion kit for Ford 5.0 with alunimum heads. This will add about 50 lbs to the front of the car. With my old 240, I used Ipd's lower springs, bilsteins and 21mm front and rear bars. The car was reliable in a fast corner though it had a surprisingly fast transition to oversteer, like a older 911. With the 760, I plan to use the lower springs, Bilsteins, 16 in wheels, new suspension bushings and Yokahama rubber - maybe 1 - 2deg negative camber but I don't know if this can be done. This still leaves the bars. I want at least a stiff front end bar to counteract the extra weight, but I noticed Ipd has no listing for such bars. Any suggestions?? My preferences are for a moderately stiff lowered car with neutral to oversteer handling and 0.85g + traction in a corner.
