I get a strong gas smell that seems to be coming from the front engine compartment when traveling on the highway and sometimes around town. I have the B23F engine with 143,000 miles.

Sounds like injector seals to me. Spray some Carb Cleaner over the top of the imjecytor seals and see if the smell stops or engine runs better, if soi it's the seals. Easy DIY Sat. Morning special. Also check the fuel filter hoses and the charcoal cannister hoses.

I have an 80 240GL that had a mystery gas smell that seemed to come in thru the sunroof. Turned out to be the big o-ring on the top of the gas-tank that seals the fuel gauge float/internal pump unit. The replacement o-ring cost $4 at the Volvo dealer. Of course, this might be completely different than your problem but I felt relieved when I figured it out & you might want to check it out. If I overfilled, topped-off, the fuel tank, it would drip onto the ground underneath --- but I only noticed it at the gas station --- that was the only visible symptom.
