cruise and power window failure[850/1995] posted by Christopher Stipp on

I need advice on correcting a cruise control failure. Worked fine a month
ago and now does not. Fuse is fine.
Left rear window fails to go up from driver's button. It will go down.
Button in back makes it go up and down just fine.

Christopher,
Don't know what your driving but if it's a 2xx series my guess for the windows is that either your button for the left rear window needs to be replaced or just clean the existing one. Evidently 240 power window buttons are notorious for getting crude on the contacts. It's pretty simple to take the switches apart, clean them then snap them back in. All you'll need is a screwdriver to snap the switch out. When I bought my old Volvo, the guy I bought it from was kind enough to show me how to do it. I also have service records that date back to '86 and the car has had several new switches, which leads me to believe this is a weakness.
As far as the Cruise Control, I don't know.
Search the archives here for both your problems and I'll bet you'll find some stuff on them.
Good Luck.

When you get those switches in your hand, clean them with Tuner Bath (cleaner). This is an expensive little can of air with solvents that clean up contacts. You can find it at Radio Shat (hate 'em but I don't know what your options are). It's $8 or $9.

I hae just repaired similar problems on my '87 740T. I cleaned my window switch by taking it apart and filing down the contacts. My cruise control problem was a split vacuum hose at the brake pedal vacuum switch. Check all of your vacuum hoses in your cruise system, including the ones under the dash.

I remember that the jedi master who trained me in my youth told me never never never sand contacts if you can help it. Why? because the scoring promotes new build-up AND other badness. Do I sand contacts? Yes and I am not a Jedi master either.

I use the regular Radio Shack tuner contact cleaner or at worse an Ink Pen eraser. 99 44/100ths of da crud comes off with the nectar of the Shack.
The absolute worst is the "Juan Valdez" syndrome-whereby you have drenched, filled, covered, etc the window, seat heater, mirror joystick, etc with coffee and a drgree of diffuculty depending on the amount of sugar dissolved within said fluid, milk acts as an insideous binder resulting a substance approaching the consistancy of fossilized dino excreta. Even if you get all the coffee out/off, the sugar reminds you every time you use the switch. Kinda like that beach sand in your nice new camcorder....
