*#!!#** emissions test failure[850/1995] posted by Randy on

I just had the opportunity to experience the dreaded e/check that is required before I can renew the registration on my 87 240. This is required in several counties in Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati area). The car has 180,000 miles is well maintained and runs like a champ. The O2 sensor has 20,000 miles on it. Within the last 8000 miles it has had new plugs, air filter, valve lash checked and within specs, and compression test (145-150 all cylinders). The throttle body was cleaned and all electrical connections in the FI system cleaned and dielectric greased. The timing was adjusted and and I ran a can of BG44K through the system .
I had to sit outside and wait 50 minutes while they tested two cars ahead of me in line. I don't know how the first car did but the IROC Z in front of me failed. They called two different supervisors to the console for the Z test which took 30 minutes. The stage was set- nobody seems to understand what is supposed to happen.
My car passed the HC and NOX portion of the test but showed 59 grams/mile CO and the limit is 30. Anybody have any ideas on possible solutions to improving the CO level?? I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with the car but until I can convince the computer of that I won't be able to renew my registration. Any suggestions (legal and nonviolent preferred) appreciated.

Your car is rich. Since you have done everything else right try the adjustment in the air mass meter. It can control the rich/lean level. There is a Volvo to do this..

Nobody, but nobody, sticks *anything* up my tailpipe! Move to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Or anyplace else that doesn't care. Burnika Faso is looking for new citizens, I hear!

Seriously, write your State Legislator, and request that he buy you a new C70 convertible. Failing that, take your car to the Volvo dealer, have him enter the info for your car into the computer, and have him stick the probe up the tailpipe up something like a new V70 that will pass.

When smog tests get all the oil-belching mid-70's GM's off the road, then I will become a believer. But in the meantime, smog tests merely opress the poor, who can't afford something that runs well.

Just my $750 (belching) Bricks' worth...

Evan
