gas in the crankcase, Yikes!![850/1995] posted by henry sholar on

I've got a 1983 245 with a B23F engine. Can anyone direct me to a
mechanical fuel pump that needs replacing because it is dumping gasoline
into my crankcase? If that isn't the cause, or if it might not be the
cause, what else could be? Many, many grateful thanks for any he'p. hen

You don't have any mechanical fuel pump on that car,
you have an intank pump and a main pump both of which are electrical.
Sounds like a major case of flooding... Did you have problems starting
the car and somebody kept pumping on the accellerator when they were
trying to start it? If not then you have a fuel supply problem (too much gas)

Check for leaking injectors (don't forget coldstart injector)

I am having no trouble starting the beast;
it fires right up and has all winter.
is there any simple test to see if its
the injectors leaking? can it be anything else?
thanks fopr all counsel on this…hen

Start and run car for a bit...shut car off...pull injectors and see if they drip. You can do a fuel pressure leakdown test but this is easier (and it's probably time to change the seals anyway)

Would also check the fuel pressure regulator. A $40 item that can cause this. Buy the Bentley manual and go thru the checks for this

What is a fuel pressure leakdown test?

Fuel system is designed to retain fuel pressure when car is shut off (check valve)to reduce cranking time. If you have a leak (like a leaking injector) you can often watch the pressure drop over time after you shut engine off. But you have to put a pressure gauge in the fuel line to tell. I'd check for a dripping injector.........

I'm not an expert, but here's what I have found out about gas in the oil. I just went through this with my B230 in my 740. Crankcase was full of gas! Turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. When the diaphram goes inside the regulator, rather than sucking at the vac line, the fuel goes straight through. You pros out there may have a better way of explaining this. If anyone didn't tell you, don't drive the car! Gas in the oil will wash off all sorts of gunk and deposits which go straight to the screen on the oil pump and stop it up. Then, you are screwed. Take the plug out and let it drain all day, so the gas in there can evaporate. I had to change my oil three times in as many days till I traced down the problem! Now, I'm paranoid. I never check my oil without smelling it!
