transmission problems[850/1995] posted by peter sjolund on

Hi,
I have a problem with my automatic transmission ZF4HP22, after a repair I am missing the lock-up function the "fifth-gear". Also when starting as cold I have to idle the the engine to 2500-3000 rpm before the gearbox changes to the second gear. Is the problem in the "converter" or is it inside the transmission. The initial problem was caused by rust (water) in the oil due to a cooler leak.
The gear box has been twice opened and cleaned. The seconf time the filter was clogged up by rust particles.
Any body having good suggestions?
How can I come in contact with the German transmission manufacturer.

Still full of hope, and waiting for good suggestions

The lock-up function lies entirely in the torque converter. My ZF needed a rebuild at 210,000 mi. I also had a slow shift from 1-2, but also had slippage in all gears. Lock-up should occur at 50mph, and the engine should be running about 2100 rpm. Check your local trans shop for suggestions. My trans shop said an additive was available to aid the slow shift, but didn't recommend it. Also check your kick-down cable for adjustment and free play. You didn't mention how many miles/km were on the car. Torque converters ain't cheap. ED7

I had problems with mine and replaced it with a AW71 Aisan Warner. It was prety easy to do and works great. The ZF are nothing but problems
