Rear Brakes - Squealing and grabbing[850/1995] posted by Jack Paltell on

Lately the rear brakes on my 87 wagon have been squealing and grabbing a little
on accelleration. No problem on stopping. The problem occurs mostly after I've
used the parking brake and it disappears after a few seconds of
driving. Is this a parking brake problem or a calipre problem?
How can I tell the difference?

Could the parking brake be stuck in a partially "on" position?

I checked the pads and rotors. They look fine. Not much glazing.

Any experience out there with a similar set of symptoms?
Any thoughts on a fix?

Jack

Since you mentioned the parking brakes, jack up the rear end, apply the park and release. Now, try to turn the wheels. Check for sticking cables.
Now apply the hydraulic brakes and check the wheels to see how easily they turn. Do this for the front also to narrow the field. ED7

I had the same problem with my rear brakes, and someone on this forum suggested installing or replacing the shims that go behind the brake pads. I tried this and it worked like a charm, no more annoying and imbarrasing squealing. I have the ATE brakes. If you call the dealer to get these shims be sure to tell them which you have. It may not show that yours has them, but they will fit and they do the job. Hope this helps to solve your brake problem
