Takes a Few Cranks[850/1995] posted by Taylor on

My 84 DL B23F 130K is usually hard to start. It seems to be a problem even when the engine is warm. I've learned to crank a turn or 2 and turn off key: repeat this several times and it fires up and runs fine. It is sluggish for a few minutes on acceleration - have to nurse it. Replaceables are in good shape or new. Dealer suggested intake valve build-up problem. I do know that cleaning the throttle plate helps for a week or 2? Any ideas?
Unrelated - tranny wants to hesitate a bit (and jerk slightly) going into third. Fluid fine although front or rear seal leaks a little. Is this an omen?
Thanks.

mY '89 240 DL does this. I have not fixed it yet but I am pretty sure it is related to fuel delivery. There is a replaceable item on the main fuel pump called a check valve. If this or any of the line has a minor leak it leads to loss of pressure in the lines. When you turn the key a few times the pressure builds up again. The sluggishness could also result from this as the system gets back up to optimum pressure from okay enough to start status.
Get a new check valve. Run Techron through the system to make sure the injoectors are not asking for more pressure AND to clean the filters on the in-take pump.
Why haven't I fixed mine? I can live with it since I have about4 other things I have to get to first.
Good Luck,

Check the prepump or in-tank pump. Mine went out, and it took forever to start the car, and the car ran and performed really crappy. Upon replacement, fires up on first try, runs great. Also, add a bottle of Techron, Slick 50, or Dura lube fuel additive on next fillup. I've got a maual tranny, a couple years ago, I had a problem with it sticking and squeaking in second, hard to get into other gears. The dealer couldn't find a problem. However, the rear seal was leaking. Replaced seal, all problems were fixed.... moral, replace the seal. I don't know what it is about it.
hope this helps
