Engine replacement[850/1995] posted by Gary Roberts on

I just discovered that the 166km actually has 266km. That is another story. Anyway, I love the car but have to investigate replacing the engine soon. Up to which model year can I look at? What other components will I have to replace?
Also heater does not reach pre-set temperature and stop. The fan drops and keeps on chugging. Gets pretty warm after 20 mins. Any ideas.

Yes, a little info may help us help you.

By the way, what makes you think you need a new engine.

Info: 1986 760 Turbo B230FT engine Automatic transmission. Todays mileage 278000km.
The mechanics that I've consulted either tell me that they hear piston slapping or that the problem is at the bottom end possibly the main bearings.
Considering its a Turbo, Isn't it close to the end?
No matter what I do it just won't run smoothly or evenly.
I've almost completely redone the fuel system from the tank up - short of the board. Finally seem to have achieved 8.12km/L city driving. The only items not replaced are the injectors. Switched back from Platinum plugs to the Super Heats. Cleaned PCV system. Replaced all intake manifold hoses. Have been running Castrol GTX 10w40 since Nov and just moved to 20W50 due to weather change. Replaced ballast resistor pack. All filters are new. Re-did the 3 engine grounds. Re-did the grounds on the front quarter panels. RPM's are about 3100 at 120-130Km.
The connections on the O2 Sensor, knock sensor, temp sensor have been re-done.
I've been cover to cover on Haynes and Chilton.
The only true oil leak after the dye test seems to be at the Oil filter assembly. I've got all the necessary O rings for the cure.
Oh ya, I had a dealer do the valves in Dec. The #1 aftermarket Volvo shop in Ottawa says I have to get the valves re-done again.
Tired and Frustrated. Maybe info overload. Any ideas.

278000km. Dealer done valves Dec97. Other mechanics say noisy engine due to piston slapping or main bearings gone. If it has to be cracked open, wouldn't it be cheaper to replace? If I have to replace, then upgrade to most recent model allowable?!
