Latency on dash lights when key turned.[850/1995] posted by Rob Abel on

My '87 740 takes about 5 seconds for the warning lights etc. to come on when
the key is turned on when cold in a.m.. When warm in afternoon after car has
been driven, they come on instantly when key is turned on. When do you know
that you need a new ignition switch electrical assembly? Would this affect
driveability?

This is a fairly commmon problem on many older Volvos and is more likely associated with poor wiring conections that a bad ignition switch. Can also be related to alternator. Try giving the top of the dash a wack with your hand. IF the lights come on. start checking for loose connections behind the dash, fuses not fully seated, ground connections with oxidation, and alternator connections.
