My daughter's DL has developed a minor coolant leak around the water pump. While topping off the resevoir I noticed a sticker calling for "Volvo coolant type C" only. Is this stuff compatable with the ordinary green stuff from Pep Boys?

Sure is. I don't think the "wrong" type of coolant can be found anymore. I would recommend using a good name brand coolant.
